Do we like Jack Sparrow?
A character from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Our score: 7 out of 10. A cowardly, self-serving rogue who keeps ending up on the right side. He's unreliable, but you'd still want him on your ship, and you'd count your valuables afterwards.
Jack Sparrow is a pirate with a sway in his walk and a slur in his speech. He is famous across the Caribbean, though often for the wrong reasons. In the first film he has lost his beloved ship, the Black Pearl, to his mutinous first mate Barbossa. He teams up with blacksmith Will Turner to chase her down and rescue Elizabeth Swann.
Jack gets by on bluff, wit and luck, and he looks out for himself first. He will happily use an ally as a distraction or a bargaining chip. He also keeps a rough code of his own, and he has a sly sense of fairness. Time after time his schemes turn out to be what helps his allies. The mess he leaves behind is usually funny rather than cruel.
We score him a 7. He is reliably entertaining, he is loyal in his own crooked way, and he rarely does real harm. Points come off because you can never fully trust him. In the sequels he dodges a debt, switches sides and leaves friends in bad spots, so we back him warmly but we keep watch over our valuables.
