Do we like Isaac Clarke?
A character from Dead Space (2008)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's a decent, stubborn problem-solver who keeps going when things are at their worst, and he's mostly motivated by saving others.
Isaac Clarke is an engineer, not a soldier. In the first Dead Space he joins a small repair crew sent to investigate the USG Ishimura, a planet-cracking mining ship that has gone silent. He arrives to find the ship overrun by horrifying creatures. He turns his tools into weapons and uses his technical skills to keep going.
His appeal is that he is ordinary and capable at the same time. He is practical and resourceful, and he stays loyal to the people he's trying to reach. The first game keeps him silent, and he is fully voiced from the sequels on. The 2023 remake also gives him a voice, performed by Gunner Wright.
We score him an 8 because his motives are consistently decent. He is scared and often in over his head, but he keeps choosing to help instead of running. The sequels dig into the toll this takes on him, and he is more fragile and more human for it.
