Our score: 7 out of 10. Flighty, dramatic and a coward about small things, but he's kind and brave where it counts. We'd back him, and we'd keep a mop handy for the tantrums.

Howl is a famous wizard, and rumours say he eats the hearts of young women. He lives in a huge, rattling castle that walks across the hills. Sophie, a quiet hat-maker, is cursed by a witch and ends up under his roof as the household cleaner.

Behind the glamour he is a restless, frightened man. He sulks over a bad hair colour and avoids anything that might tie him down. He also takes in strays, and he is gentle with Sophie, his apprentice Markl and the fire demon Calcifer.

We score him 7. He's far from a flawless hero, but his charm and his courage when it matters make him easy to root for. His kindness outweighs his vanity.
