Do we like Homer Simpson?
A character from The Simpsons (1989–present)
Our score: 7 out of 10. He's lazy, selfish and daft, but he loves his family and has a good heart. We'd back him, though we wouldn't let him near anything important.
Homer is the dad of the Simpson family in the town of Springfield. He works as a safety inspector at the nuclear power plant. His wife is Marge, and their kids are Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Britannica describes him as a devotee of beer, doughnuts and bacon. The show follows the family's everyday misadventures, with Homer at the centre of most of them.
He is lazy, short-tempered, forgetful and not very bright. He often ignores good advice and jumps into schemes without thinking, and he picks up new jobs and hobbies and drops them again just as fast. His mistakes usually land on his family and neighbours, Ned Flanders most of all.
What keeps us on his side is his heart. Under the stupidity he loves Marge and the kids. When it counts, he shows up for them, and he's funny and warm along the way. His tenderness shows most in the earlier seasons. Writers have sometimes made him more of a jerk, which is why he gets a 7 and not higher.
