Do we like Harry Hole?
A character from The Bat (Jo Nesbø's Harry Hole novels) (1997–present)
Our score: 7 out of 10. Flawed and often a mess, but his stubborn drive for justice and loyalty to the vulnerable make him a detective we'd back, ideally while hiding the bottle.
Harry Hole is a detective with Oslo's police in Jo Nesbø's long-running Norwegian crime series, which began in 1997. He is gifted and obsessive, but also withdrawn, and he struggles with alcoholism and depression. Each book sets him on the trail of a killer or a conspiracy.
He is at his best when a case gets personal. He works unorthodox, sometimes illegal methods, clashes with superiors and rivals, and cares fiercely for the few people he lets close. That mix of brilliance and self-sabotage is why we land on a warm 7: he does real good, but he leaves damage behind him too.
He has reached screens twice. Michael Fassbender played him in the 2017 film The Snowman, which was poorly received. Tobias Santelmann plays him in Netflix's Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole (2026), which adapts The Devil's Star, with Joel Kinnaman as rival officer Tom Waaler.
