Do we like Harold Bishop?
A character from Neighbours (1987–2025)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Pompous, soft-hearted and hopelessly sincere. He would lend you his last dollar and a lecture with it, and we'd back him every time.
Harold Bishop arrived in Neighbours in January 1987. He was meant to appear for only a few weeks, but he became one of the show's longest-running characters. He is a fastidious, slightly pompous man who takes his community seriously, and he is also generous and gentle. Over the years he builds a family around him in Erinsborough.
His appeal is that his flaws are harmless: he is a stickler, a bit vain and an easy target for jokes. Underneath that he is steadfastly loyal, forgiving and quick to help. He is the kind of neighbour who turns up with a casserole and a moral.
He left in 1991 in a way that seemed to be the end of him, then returned in 1996 as a changed man. After that he stayed a fixture of the street for years, with later guest returns. His final storyline, as the show wound down, saw him leave Erinsborough to travel around Australia.
