Do we like Hange Zoë?

A character from Attack on Titan (2013-2023)

Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes. Hange is brilliant, loyal and kind, and the weirdness is part of the charm. You'd back them, though you'd keep them away from your pet.

Attack on Titan is set in a world where the last of humanity lives behind huge walls to hide from giant, man-eating Titans. Hange Zoë is a squad leader in the Survey Corps, the branch that goes outside the walls. They are a scientist at heart, delighted by every odd detail of the Titans, and happy to talk about them for hours.

Under the goggles and the manic energy is a sharp tactician with deep loyalty to their soldiers. Hange's captured-Titan experiments are unsettling, and they can be reckless. They also grieve for every soldier lost, and the curiosity is always aimed at finding a way to save people. That mix of brains, heart and chaos earns the high score.

As the war grows, Hange takes on far heavier leadership and is pushed toward the hardest choices of the story. Even then, they keep looking for a way to talk rather than fight, and they stay true to their friends to the end.
