Do we like Han Solo?

A character from Star Wars (A New Hope) (1977)

Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He starts out in it for the money, but he's a loyal friend with a quick wit, and he comes through when it counts.

Han Solo is a smuggler who flies the Millennium Falcon with his Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca. When we meet him, he is in debt to a crime boss. He agrees to fly Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi across the galaxy for a high fee. He is sarcastic, practical and sure of himself, and he doesn't care about causes.

Our score reflects how he changes. George Lucas described him as a loner who comes to see the value of being part of a group and of working for the common good. Under the swagger he is very loyal to his friends. He is brave and funny, and he is easy to follow. His selfish streak and his rule-breaking stop him from being a perfect hero, but they are a big part of his charm.

He returns to the fight after helping Luke destroy the Death Star, and he becomes a respected figure in the Rebel Alliance. Over the films he falls in love with Leia. In the later trilogy he is older and acts as a mentor to a new generation. He still has the same instincts, and he also has a family and a past to deal with.
