Do we like Guts?
A character from Berserk (1989–present)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's gruff, damaged and violent, but he keeps fighting for the people he loves and refuses to let fate decide for him.
Guts is a mercenary in a grim medieval-style world. He was raised on battlefields and learned early that the only thing he could count on was his own strength. The story follows him as a lone swordsman, carrying a sword far too big for an ordinary man, through a land haunted by demonic creatures.
He is hard to love at first. He is distrustful, short-tempered and worn down by a lifetime of violence. But his actions are consistently decent. He shields people who can't defend themselves, and he keeps going when anyone sensible would quit. The people who stay with him are drawn by his stubborn honesty and his refusal to give in.
We score him an 8. The violence and the rage count against him, but his loyalty, his courage and his determination to choose his own path outweigh them. He is a flawed hero, and a compelling one.
