Do we like Gudetama?
A character from Gudetama (Sanrio franchise; Netflix's Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure) (2013–present)
Our score: 8 out of 10. We wouldn't follow him anywhere, since he won't get off the couch. He's harmless and weirdly relatable, so we'd back him, as long as he can stay lying down.
Gudetama was created by Sanrio designer Amy (Emi Nagashima) in 2013. He is an egg yolk with a permanent look of weary resignation. The name blends the Japanese words for "lazy" (gudegude) and "egg" (tamago). He started as a food-themed character and became one of Sanrio's biggest earners, behind only Hello Kitty and My Melody.
His basic situation is that he is an egg, and eggs get eaten. He doesn't fight it. He sighs, slumps and gets on with doing as little as possible. The character has shown up in a morning anime on TBS in Japan and in many shorts.
In Netflix's Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure (December 2022), a hybrid of live action and CG, he goes with a newly hatched chick named Shakipiyo to look for their mother. Gudetama grumbles the whole way. That makes him a reluctant companion and not a hero. We score him a 6 because he is harmless, funny and honest about wanting a nap.
