Do we like Gru?
A character from Despicable Me (2010)
Our score: 8 out of 10. A softie hiding under a villain's coat. He starts out selfish, but he is a loyal, loving dad, and we'd happily back him.
Gru is a gloomy supervillain living in a spooky house with a crowd of Minions and a lab full of gadgets. He wants to top his rival Vector by pulling off a record-breaking heist: stealing the Moon with a shrink ray.
To get past Vector's defenses, Gru adopts three orphan girls, Margo, Edith and Agnes, and plans to use them in his scheme. His grumpy exterior hides some real loneliness. He is not a natural parent, but the girls keep wearing him down.
He scores an 8 because his villainy is mostly bluster and his instincts turn out to be kind. He is a flawed but lovable guy who learns to care for others, and the film makes a strong case for backing him.
