Do we like Groot?
A character from Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's loyal, brave and kind, and he's the one Guardian who starts the story without a selfish streak. Just don't leave him near anything breakable.
Groot is a tree-like alien, a "flora colossus", who can grow, stretch and control wood. He starts out as the muscle half of a bounty-hunting pair with the wisecracking raccoon Rocket. Everyone hears "I am Groot" every time he speaks, but Rocket understands exactly what he means. Their misadventures land them in prison. There they meet Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax, and the group becomes the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Groot's charm is that he is simple and decent in a crew of cynics, thieves and grudge-holders. He doesn't scheme or hold grudges, and he is gentle with anyone who is kind to him. Fans get a lot of warmth and humor from him, and from the odd way he and Rocket understand each other. When a fight starts, he is also a very good person to have on your side.
His biggest moment comes in the first film, when he gives up everything to shield his friends. He comes back as a sapling known as Baby Groot, who is sweet, easily distracted and often the funniest thing on screen. In later films he grows up again, and he stays loyal to Rocket and the team the whole way. That's why he scores so high.
