Do we like Goofy?
A character from Mickey Mouse and Goofy shorts (first seen in Mickey's Revue) (1932)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's daft and disaster-prone, but he's loyal and kind, and he never turns on a friend. We'd just keep him away from anything breakable.
Goofy first appeared in 1932 as a member of the audience in Mickey's Revue. What stood out about him was his raucous laugh, supplied by Disney storyman and former circus clown Pinto Colvig. He was first named Dippy Dawg in the comic strips, and he soon became part of Mickey's gang alongside Minnie, Pluto and Donald Duck.
He later got his own run of cartoons, in which he plays everything from a bumbling everyman to a sports instructor. The 1990s series Goof Troop made him a single father to his son Max, and that was followed by A Goofy Movie. Bill Farmer has voiced him since 1986.
We score him 9 out of 10 because he is the friend who turns up, says yes and tries his best. He is not clever and he is rarely competent. But he is never cruel, never scheming and never selfish. The one thing holding him back from a perfect score is the trail of chaos he leaves behind.
