Do we like Gon Freecss?
A character from Hunter x Hunter (1998 (manga), 2011 ()
Our score: 7 out of 10. Mostly yes. He's loyal, brave and kind, and he's a great friend. But his stubborn tunnel vision and willingness to risk everything can scare you.
Gon is a boy raised on Whale Island by his aunt Mito. He grows up believing his father is dead, then learns that Ging is a famous Hunter and very much alive. Gon wants to find out what job could be worth more to a man than his own son. So he takes the Hunter Exam, a brutal test that gives successful candidates a license to chase treasure, beasts and secrets.
His best qualities are plain. He is curious, honest and warm. He has sharp animal instincts from growing up outdoors, and he makes friends easily, including Killua, Kurapika and Leorio. He often jumps in to help people without thinking about what it might cost him. He is also stubborn. Once he has decided on something, he can ignore danger and other people's worries. Even his creator reportedly thought of him as an ideal son, but he is more complicated than that.
That determination is why we'd back him, and also why we'd worry. In the Chimera Ant arc, the loss of someone close to him turns his cheerful drive into cold, single-minded rage. He is willing to give up everything for one goal, and it frightens the people who love him. It shows that his kindness has a darker side, and that his friendships keep him grounded.
