Do we like Garfield?
A character from Garfield (1978–present)
Our score: 4 out of 10. Funny company, but we wouldn't back him. He's selfish and lazy, though he has a soft spot he'd never admit to.
Garfield is a heavyset orange tabby who hates Mondays, loves lasagna and sleeps whenever he can. Jim Davis's strip began on June 19, 1978. It follows Garfield, his owner Jon Arbuckle and Jon's dog Odie, and it went on to become one of the most widely syndicated comic strips ever.
Most gags come from Garfield's sarcasm, laziness and greed. He mocks Jon's awful dates, boots Odie off the table, torments the neighbourhood and schemes for food. He also stays loyal to his odd little household, and he's more attached to Jon and Odie than he lets on.
That earns him a middling score. He's great company and he never pretends to be a hero. But his selfishness is the engine of the joke, and he does far more to annoy than to help. We like him the way you like a funny, grumpy housemate: fine to hang out with, but not someone to back.
