Do we like Fred Jones?

A character from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! (1969)

Our score: 8 out of 10. A confident, decent leader who always steps up. His plans rarely go to plan and he splits the gang up too often, but we'd still back him.

Fred is the leader of Mystery Inc., a gang of teenage sleuths made up of Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. They travel in the Mystery Machine van and keep running into ghosts, monsters and other spooky local legends. He is voiced by Frank Welker, who has played him since the 1969 debut. Freddie Prinze Jr. played him in the live-action films.

His defining traits are confidence, a blond all-American look and a love of traps. He treats each mystery like a chess match and sets up elaborate Rube Goldberg-style contraptions to catch the 'monster'. Shaggy and Scooby often set them off by accident, but the villain usually ends up caught anyway. He also loves to say 'Let's split up, gang!'.

Our score is high because Fred is a steady, selfless leader. He doesn't believe in the supernatural, he keeps hunting for the real culprit, and he drives the investigation forward. He loses points for his ego, for being overconfident in his plans, and for sending the gang off in pairs when sticking together would be safer. He's a reliable and likeable team captain, if not the most self-aware one.
