Do we like Fox Mulder?
A character from The X-Files (1993–2018)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Stubborn and obsessive, but he's brave, loyal and kind. We'd back him, ideally with a sceptical partner along to keep him grounded.
Mulder is a gifted FBI profiler who ends up running the X-Files, a neglected section of unsolved cases with apparent paranormal or extraterrestrial links. Colleagues mock him, but he believes in the unexplained. His belief comes from his sister's disappearance when they were children.
The FBI pairs him with Dana Scully, a medical doctor and sceptic, who is meant to bring scientific rigour to his work. They become one of TV's best-known duos. He supplies the leaps of faith, she supplies the evidence, and he is often proven right.
He scores well because his obsession comes with real compassion, dry humour and courage. He is flawed: secretive, impulsive and hard to work with. But he keeps fighting for the truth and for the people he cares about, and that makes him easy to root for.
