Do we like Edna Mode?
A character from The Incredibles (2004)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes. She's brutally honest and a little terrifying, and she's brilliant at her job. She looks after her clients' safety better than they do, so we'd back her.
Edna Mode is the go-to costume designer for the world's superheroes. She's small, sharp-tongued and never impressed by anyone's ego. In The Incredibles, a family of supers has to live quietly as ordinary people. Edna is the one who knows what a proper hero's suit should be.
She is imperious, funny and completely devoted to her craft. She dismisses bad ideas, such as heroes who want capes, with total confidence. Underneath that, she thinks about practical things: suits that stretch, resist fire and survive the hero's powers. Her habit of calling everyone 'darling' is the sweetest thing about her.
We score her an 8. She is rude, but she is never cruel in a way that matters, and her standards save people. She has the best scenes in the film and we'd gladly take her side, though we'd prepare for a scolding.
