Do we like Dorothy Gale?
A character from The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's brave, loyal and kind, and she looks after her friends even when she's scared and far from home.
Dorothy Gale is a young girl living on a Kansas farm with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry and her dog Toto. Feeling out of place and longing for somewhere better, she is caught in a tornado that carries her house to the strange, colourful land of Oz.
In Oz she is told she must follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard for help getting home. Along the way she befriends a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion, and the Wicked Witch of the West hunts her for her ruby slippers. Dorothy is polite, curious and stubborn, and she stands up for her friends, even when she is terrified.
She earns a high score because her motives are always kind. She never seeks power or revenge, and she is the heart of the group. Her only real flaws are youthful naivety and impulsiveness, which are easy to forgive.
In the end she learns she had the power to go home all along, and she returns to Kansas with a new appreciation of what she has. The film closes on the famous line "there's no place like home."
