Do we like Donkey Kong?
A character from Donkey Kong Country (1994)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's goofy and a bit gluttonous, but he's loyal, brave and always smashes his way toward protecting his friends and his bananas.
Donkey Kong is a powerful gorilla who lives on a tropical island with his Kong family. He is best known from the Donkey Kong Country games, which started in 1994. In them he runs, rolls and swings through jungles, mines and factories, with a sidekick or two such as Diddy Kong.
His trouble usually starts when someone steals his prized banana hoard or kidnaps a friend. The culprits are often the scheming King K. Rool and his Kremling crew. He doesn't plan much: he charges in, beats the bad guys and gets his stuff back.
We score him an 8 for steady heroism and loyalty. He is greedy about bananas and a bit of a show-off, but his heart is in the right place. Recent adventures like Donkey Kong Bananza (2025) also show him making new friends rather than only fighting.
