Do we like Deadpool?
A character from The New Mutants #98 (Marvel Comics) (1991)
Our score: 6 out of 10. Loud, filthy and a menace to property, but he'll go through anything for the few people he loves. We'd back him, though we'd keep him away from the good china.
Deadpool is the alter ego of Wade Wilson. He first appeared in 1991's The New Mutants #98. He was introduced as a villain but soon grew into an anti-hero. Wade was an ordinary man with cancer who joined a military program called Weapon X to cure himself. The procedure gave him a powerful healing factor. The cure came with a ruined face and a very loose grip on sanity.
His trademark is breaking the fourth wall and giving unfiltered commentary on just about everything. That includes the people making the stories he's in. Ryan Reynolds plays him in the films, and Nolan North has voiced him in animation.
On screen, the most recent big outing is Deadpool & Wolverine. Wade tries to settle into an ordinary life after failing to impress in an interview to join the Avengers. Then the Time Variance Authority tells him his universe is about to collapse. He won't lose the few people he truly loves, so he crosses the multiverse to find a replacement Wolverine and save his reality. That sums him up. He's selfish and chaotic on the surface, but he's loyal underneath.
We scored him a 6 because he's a charming mess. He causes plenty of carnage and has no respect for rules or good taste. But he's fiercely devoted to his friends and he draws a line at harming children. He's fun company and a risky ally, so he lands in the middle but leans positive.
