Do we like Cruella de Vil?
A character from One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
Our score: 0 out of 10. Absolutely not. She wants to turn puppies into a coat, and she is rude and reckless with it. She is iconic, but we would never back her.
Cruella de Vil is a glamorous, spoiled heiress in a huge fur coat, with half-black, half-white hair and a cigarette holder. She first appears in Dodie Smith's 1956 novel. Disney's 1961 animated film, with animation by Marc Davis, made her famous. Betty Lou Gerson voices her.
She's an old school friend of Anita, who lives in London with her husband Roger and their pet Dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita. When the Dalmatians have a big litter of puppies, Cruella tries to buy them all. Her interest has nothing to do with affection. She wants the spotted coats for fashion.
We score her 0 because she has no redeeming side. She is vain, she is happy to be cruel, and she treats people as tools. Her greed puts dozens of animals in danger. She is a delight to watch and a monster to back, which is why she is such a lasting Disney villain.
