Do we like Creeper?
A character from Minecraft (2009–present)
Our score: 3 out of 10. Not a villain by choice, but it wrecks your house and your afternoon. We'd admire it from a very safe distance.
The Creeper is one of the most recognisable mobs in Minecraft, a sandbox game about mining, building and surviving. It is a quiet, green, four-legged creature that wanders the world, usually after dark. It has no weapon and makes almost no sound until it is close to you.
Its one trick is to approach you, hiss and explode. The blast damages you and blows holes in the terrain and anything you've built. Its origin is famously a mistake: according to Kotaku and Sportskeeda, creator Notch was trying to model a pig and got the proportions wrong. In the Mojang documentary he called creepers a mistake, and he has said he doesn't know why they explode.
We score it low because it destroys things, but it isn't truly evil. It's an animal-like hazard with no plan or grudge. It also gives players gunpowder, which makes it useful as well as annoying, and it has become the unofficial face of the game.
