Do we like Commander Shepard?
A character from Mass Effect (2007-2012)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes. Shepard is brave and sticks by their crew, and they can win over almost anyone. Even when you play them rough, they put the galaxy first.
Shepard is a human soldier in the Alliance military. The player picks their gender, background and look. At the start of the first game, Shepard becomes the first human Spectre, an elite agent who answers to the galactic Council. They take command of the Normandy, a cutting-edge starship, and chase a rogue agent who is a danger to everyone.
What makes Shepard easy to back is the crew. Shepard recruits a varied team and learns their problems, and they often go to great lengths for them. The player's choices shape whether Shepard is a gentle diplomat, a ruthless pragmatist, or something in between.
Even at their worst, Shepard is trying to stop a galaxy-wide catastrophe, and that keeps them firmly on the side of good. The score drops a little only because some dark choices are available and Shepard's wars cause a lot of collateral damage.
