Do we like Chucky?
A character from Child's Play (1988)
Our score: 1 out of 10. A foul-mouthed, merciless killer in a doll's body. He's great fun to watch, but we wouldn't back him, and we wouldn't leave him alone with the babysitter.
Charles Lee Ray is the "Lakeshore Strangler", a Chicago serial killer. Cornered by police and shot, he uses a voodoo ritual to move his soul into a Good Guy doll in a toy store. The doll then reaches six-year-old Andy Barclay as a birthday present from his mother, who has no idea what is inside it.
Chucky starts out as Andy's cheerful best friend, but the act doesn't last. He is quick-tempered, cruel and hungry for revenge. He is also cunning, and he uses the fact that no one believes a child's story about a living doll. He's the kind of villain you enjoy for his wisecracks and mean streak, but you'd never trust him.
We score him 1 out of 10. He gets a point for being such entertaining company on screen, but he has no redeeming acts. Every plan he makes puts someone else in danger, and he is nothing like the loyal friend he says he is.
The film's main plot is his attempt to take over Andy's body so he can become human again. He fails, but he doesn't stay gone. He comes back in sequels and later a TV series, where he is as cruel as ever.
