Do we like Christian Grey?
A character from Fifty Shades of Grey (2011)
Our score: 3 out of 10. Not one to back. He has a painful past and a generous streak, but his stalking, jealousy and control are hard to excuse, however glossy the romance.
Christian Grey is a young Seattle billionaire who runs his own company. He is intensely private and used to getting his way. Literature student Anastasia Steele meets him when she interviews him for her roommate. The meeting leads to a relationship that doesn't follow ordinary rules.
Christian wants a relationship on his own terms, set out in a detailed contract. He is guarded and has a troubled past that the story hints at. He is also charming, generous with gifts and donations, and plainly drawn to Ana in a way that unsettles him.
Our score is low because of how he acts. He tracks Ana, buys into her workplace, gets jealous and treats control as care. Commentators often say the story romanticises these behaviours, and his wealth makes them seem more glamorous than they are. His sympathetic backstory and moments of real tenderness keep him from a zero.
