Do we like Chewbacca?

A character from Star Wars (1977)

Our score: 10 out of 10. Absolutely. He's brave, loyal and good with a wrench, and he's the friend you'd want in a firefight. Just don't let him lose at board games.

Chewbacca is a Wookiee, a tall, hairy species from the forest planet Kashyyyk. We first meet him in Star Wars (1977) as the first mate of smuggler Han Solo. Together they fly the Millennium Falcon, and they get pulled into a rebellion against the galactic Empire when they take on two passengers, an old Jedi and a farm boy.

He looks fearsome, but he's warm, funny and fiercely protective of his friends. He speaks only in Wookiee roars, and everyone around him seems to understand him anyway. He's also a clever engineer who keeps the Falcon flying through one disaster after another. He is strong and quick to anger, but he fights for his friends and for freedom, never for cruelty. That's why he gets a perfect score.

Across the saga he stays loyal when things go badly. He sticks by Han and the Rebel cause through captures, rescues and losses. He later passes that loyalty on to a new generation of heroes, so he is still helping the cause decades after the first film.
