Do we like Cheshire Cat?
A character from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865)
Our score: 6 out of 10. He's amusing and honest about Wonderland's madness, and he's the only one who points Alice in a direction. But he's a detached trickster who won't get involved.
In Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel, a girl called Alice falls down a rabbit hole into a nonsensical world. She meets many odd and often rude creatures there. The Cheshire Cat is one of the few who treats her with any calm.
He first shows up around the Duchess's house and later turns up in a tree. He is known for his wide grin, which can linger after the rest of him fades away. He tells Alice that everyone in Wonderland is mad, herself included, and he treats the whole thing as perfectly normal.
We score him a 6. He is clever, honest and unfazed by the chaos, and he never joins the bullying and shouting around him. But he is aloof. He steers Alice with riddles rather than real help, and he mostly seems to be enjoying the show.
