Do we like Cell?

A character from Dragon Ball Z (1989-1996)

Our score: 1 out of 10. No. He's a smug, murderous monster who treats the planet as a stage for his own tournament. His showmanship is great fun to watch, but we wouldn't back him.

Cell is the main villain of the Android Saga in Dragon Ball Z, created by Akira Toriyama. He is the final creation of the mad scientist Dr. Gero, a bio-android assembled from the cells of the strongest fighters, including Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and Frieza. He starts out far weaker than earlier villains, so he has to scheme and hunt rather than just overpower people.

His goal is to reach his 'perfect' form, and he is willing to absorb living people to get there. He is arrogant, theatrical and cruel, and he enjoys toying with the heroes. That makes him one of the show's most memorable villains. He also has a real sense of showmanship, but nothing in him is sympathetic or worth backing.

Once he is powerful enough, he announces the Cell Games, a fighting tournament with the Earth as the prize. It is a ruthless, self-serving spectacle, and it forces the heroes into a deadly showdown. His story is a good fight, but he is a villain from start to finish.
