Do we like Catwoman?

A character from Batman (DC Comics) (1940–present)

Our score: 7 out of 10. A thief with a conscience. She steals from the rich and looks after the vulnerable. She's not always reliable, but we'd back her, and we'd keep an eye on our valuables.

Selina Kyle first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940, where she was called "the Cat". She is an acrobatic cat burglar who works the rooftops of Gotham City. She wears a catsuit and goggles-topped cowl, carries a whip, and keeps a lot of cats around. Many versions of her story give her a hard upbringing in Gotham's rougher streets.

Her relationship with Batman is the core of the character. She is a thief and he is a vigilante, so they are often on opposite sides. They also share a strong attraction and a respect for each other that never fully goes away. Writers have played her as a villain, an ally and an anti-hero. She is usually the one person Batman can't quite pin down.

We give her a 7 because her moral compass is more reliable than her record suggests. Her crimes are mostly about money and thrills, and she is generally written as someone who isn't evil. She cares about people who can't protect themselves, and she is loyal to her friends. She loses points for the thieving and for betraying people who trust her.
