Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's brave, calm and caring, and he always puts the crew and the creatures first, with only a little bossiness and a few worries.

Captain Barnacles is a polar bear who commands the Octonauts, a team of animal explorers living in the Octopod, an underwater base. Each episode they get a call about a creature in trouble, and they set out in their Gup vehicles to help.

He is the steady centre of the crew. He gives the order to launch, and he is quick to say 'Octonauts, to your stations!' He is brave and has a strong sense of duty. He is also a little dramatic and fussy about rules, and he sometimes worries about his crew.

He scores high because his leadership is gentle and he is open to others' ideas. He listens to Kwazii, Peso, Dashi and the rest of the team. He treats wild animals with respect rather than as threats, and he usually explains why caring for the sea matters.
