Do we like Calcifer?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Grumpy, vain and loud, but loyal and brave when it counts. He's a small flame with a big heart, and we'd back him.

Calcifer is a fire demon who lives in the hearth of Howl's walking castle. He powers the whole thing and he complains constantly about being hungry, overworked and underappreciated. The story begins when young Sophie, cursed by a witch, wanders into the castle and strikes a deal with him.

He's sharp-tongued, vain and always bargaining, but he is funny and warm with it. He and Sophie make an unlikely team. He teases her, she scolds him, and they end up looking after each other. Behind the bluster he is bound by magic he can't escape alone, which makes him easy to feel for.

We score him 8 out of 10. He's selfish in small ways, but his loyalty, humour and willingness to help when things get dangerous make him one of the film's most lovable characters.
