Do we like Buzz Lightyear?
A character from Toy Story (1995)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's earnest, brave and loyal, and he'll cross a whole city to bring a friend home. He's also a bit full of himself, which is half his charm.
Buzz arrives in Andy's room as a shiny new birthday present. He is a space ranger action figure who truly believes he's a real Space Ranger on a mission to save the galaxy. He doesn't know he's a toy. He's brave and honourable, with a catchphrase about going "to infinity and beyond". The other toys find him baffling, and Woody finds him a threat, because Buzz is quickly becoming Andy's new favourite.
His score comes from how he treats people once the posturing falls away. He's sincere and loyal, he takes his duty seriously, and he's never cruel. His flaws are comic ones: pride, stubbornness and a talent for taking things too literally. In the sequels he keeps showing up for his friends, including a rescue mission to save Woody from a greedy toy collector.
In the first film he has to face the fact that he's a toy, and he takes it badly. He comes out of it with a better idea of what makes him matter, which is the people he looks after. That change is why he ends up as a true friend and a hero rather than a space-ranger gag.
