Do we like Bran Stark?
A character from Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
Our score: 5 out of 10. Gentle and brave early on, but he grows into a cold, distant seer. We'd respect him and trust his knowledge, but we wouldn't call him warm company.
Bran is the second son and fourth child of Lord Eddard Stark, and he's a boy who loves climbing the walls and towers of Winterfell. In the very first episode he sees something he was never meant to see, and he is pushed from a high ledge. He survives, but he loses the use of his legs and the future he'd imagined as a knight.
Recovery brings dreams of a three-eyed raven and the discovery that he is a warg and a greenseer. Those powers let him enter animals' minds and see the past. He's a sweet, loyal kid at the start. As his abilities grow he becomes distant and intense, and the show plays up his unblinking stare. He takes on a huge responsibility, and the show's Bran keeps less and less of the person he was.
Our score is a middle one. Bran is brave, dutiful and rarely cruel, and what he knows matters to the whole story. But he's detached and unreadable, and he sits out much of the action while friends and family suffer. He's easy to respect and hard to love.
In the series finale Bran is chosen as king of Westeros and named Bran the Broken. Many fans were surprised or unhappy about it. Isaac Hempstead Wright said the idea came from George R.R. Martin's plans for the character. A king who sees everything but is driven by nothing personal splits opinion, which is why the score stays in the middle.
