Do we like BoJack Horseman?
A character from BoJack Horseman (2014-2020)
Our score: 4 out of 10. We'd root for him, but we wouldn't trust him with our stuff. He means well and wants to change. He keeps hurting the people who stick by him.
BoJack was the star of a hit 90s family sitcom, "Horsin' Around". Two decades on, he lives in a big Hollywood house, drinks too much and tries to find a way back to relevance. He is a horse in a world where people and talking animals live side by side. His ghostwriter Diane helps him with a memoir. His agent and ex Princess Carolyn and his freeloading roommate Todd are around him too. It plays as a comedy, and it gets very dark.
BoJack is sharp, funny and deeply unhappy. He wants to be loved and he is sure he doesn't deserve it. He pushes away anyone who gets close. He keeps promising to change, and the show won't let him off the hook with a quick fix. He is a portrait of self-destruction played for laughs and for pain.
We score him 4 out of 10. He is great company on screen, and his pain is easy to feel for. In real life he would be exhausting and sometimes dangerous to be around. Some of his worst actions can't be shrugged off as the booze talking. We'd back him in therapy, not as a roommate.
