Do we like Basil Fawlty?
A character from Fawlty Towers (1975-1979)
Our score: 4 out of 10. Hilarious to watch, dreadful to work for. He's rude, scheming and cowardly, but his disasters are mostly self-inflicted, so we'd back him only from a safe distance.
Basil runs Fawlty Towers, a faded hotel in Torquay, with his sharp-tongued wife Sybil. He dreams of attracting a better class of guest. The staff are chambermaid Polly and Manuel, the well-meaning but chaotic waiter from Barcelona.
Each episode, a small problem grows into a farce. Basil lies to cover it up, panics, and makes it worse. He fawns over anyone he thinks is posh and treats everyone else with contempt. He often takes out his frustration on Manuel.
We scored him a 4 because he is hard to like but easy to enjoy. He is rude, petty and dishonest, and he seldom learns from his mistakes. But the comedy punishes him far more than anyone else, and his bursts of rage make him one of TV's most quotable characters. John Cleese won a BAFTA for the role, and the character drew on a real hotel owner the Monty Python team met in Torquay.
