Do we like Baloo?
A character from The Jungle Book (1967)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Lazy on the surface, loyal underneath. He's a free-spirited pal who'd risk himself for a kid he's known only a short while, so yes, we'd back him.
Baloo is a big, shaggy sloth bear who lives by one rule: don't worry, and enjoy the simple things. He meets Mowgli, a human boy raised by wolves, while the panther Bagheera is escorting the boy to the man-village for his own safety.
Baloo takes Mowgli under his wing and shows him his carefree way of life, singing 'The Bare Necessities'. He wants to keep the boy with him, and that makes him stubborn and a little selfish. He is also a poor judge of how much danger Mowgli is really in, since Shere Khan the tiger is hunting the boy.
We score him high because his warmth is real, and when Mowgli is in trouble he doesn't hesitate to step in. Few Disney sidekicks and mentors are this easy to like. His main flaw is that he'd sooner have fun than face hard truths.
