Do we like Backpack?
A character from Dora the Explorer (2000–)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's reliable, cheerful and always packed with the right gear. Her one flaw is that she hands over the wrong thing until you shout for it.
Backpack is Dora's best-known helper in Dora the Explorer, a preschool series. Dora and her monkey friend Boots set out on adventures and solve problems by asking the viewers at home to help. Backpack goes with them nearly every time.
Her role is simple. She holds everything the team might need, and she opens up when viewers at home call her name. She has a Spanish name, Mochila, and a cheerful song. Both fit the show's mix of English and Spanish, and they help teach counting, problem-solving and early vocabulary.
She scores well because she is dependable and kind, and she does no harm. She isn't a hero who fights anyone. She's the friend who packed everything and never complains about the weight. We lose a couple of points because she isn't much of a personality, and she makes everyone wait while she digs for the right item.
