Do we like Augustus Gloop?
A character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964)
Our score: 3 out of 10. He's not cruel, just ruled by his appetite. He's hard to back because he ignores every warning when there's chocolate nearby.
Augustus Gloop is one of five children who find golden tickets in Wonka chocolate bars. They win a tour of Willy Wonka's mysterious factory. Augustus is the first to be found, and he is famous for his enormous appetite. The story presents him as a warning about greed.
On the tour he can't resist Wonka's edible wonders, and he ignores instructions whenever food is involved. He isn't spiteful or scheming like some of the other winners. His flaw is simple gluttony, which his doting parent encourages.
That's why he scores low but not at rock bottom. He's a cautionary figure rather than a villain. We like his enthusiasm, but we wouldn't trust him near a chocolate river, or to follow a plan.
