Do we like Al Swearengen?
A character from Deadwood (2004-2006, 2019)
Our score: 4 out of 10. He's a ruthless crook you wouldn't trust with your wallet, but he's also the one holding the camp together, and he's weirdly easy to back.
Deadwood is set in an unlicensed gold-rush camp in the Dakota Territory in 1876, where no law has yet arrived. Al runs the Gem Saloon and the rackets around it, ruling the camp like a corrupt riverboat captain. He's loosely based on a real figure, though the show changes many details.
He's profane, manipulative and quick to violence, and he treats people as tools. But he's also sharp and funny, and he thinks hard about what the camp needs. He keeps the peace in his own way, because a stable camp is good for business.
Our score is 6: he does real harm and we'd never trust him, but he's loyal in his own twisted way, and McShane's performance makes him hard not to root for. Critics often cite him as one of TV's great anti-heroes.
