Do we like Agent Smith?
A character from The Matrix (1999)
Our score: 2 out of 10. No. He is smart, funny and scary, but he wants to crush human freedom and he despises people. He is a great villain and not someone we'd back.
Agent Smith is one of the sentient programs that guard the Matrix, the computer-made world that keeps humans unaware of their real situation. He wears a suit and earpiece, speaks with cold precision, and treats humans as a problem to be fixed. He first appears hunting Neo and the rebels who have started waking people up.
What makes Smith stand out is his personality. He is polite, sneering and obsessed, and he openly says he finds humanity disgusting. Hugo Weaving's clipped, menacing delivery made him one of cinema's best-known villains, and Empire put him on its list of the greatest movie characters.
We score him low because he is cruel and wants to dominate everyone. He is a fine villain, but nobody would choose to follow him. The sequels change what he is and what he wants, and that makes him more dangerous still.
