Do we like Aeryn Sun?
A character from Farscape (1999–2003)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's tough and fiercely loyal, and she learns to question orders. Once she does, she's a friend you'd want next to you in a firefight.
Aeryn Sun is a Peacekeeper, a disciplined soldier and fighter pilot in a harsh military empire. She has been drilled to follow orders and not to ask questions. Farscape opens when she is picked up by Moya, a living ship carrying escaped prisoners. She is stuck among them, and an astronaut from Earth, John Crichton, is soon thrown in with them too.
At first she's prickly, proud and suspicious of the crew. She is blunt about feelings and has little patience for the odd, messy ways of her new shipmates. She is also very competent. She flies and fights better than almost anyone aboard, and she is stubbornly honest.
We back her because of how she changes. She starts out believing in the only life she has known, then learns to doubt it and think for herself. She keeps her toughness and her dry humour, but she becomes warmer and more loyal. She does hurt people, but she does it as a soldier and not out of cruelty. The good she does for the crew far outweighs the harm.
By the end she has gone from a battle-hardened soldier to a wife and parent. She is a true keeper of the peace, and Crichton is her partner for all of it.
