Do we like Cha Eun-woo?

Our score: 6 out of 10. Nothing harmful on the record and a real donation, but an unresolved tax dispute and thin evidence of him using his platform for others.

Cha Eun-woo, born Lee Dong-min in 1997, started with a small part in the 2014 film My Brilliant Life, then debuted with the boy band Astro in February 2016. The acting took off from there: Gangnam Beauty, Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung, True Beauty and Island. He has also been a brand ambassador for Burberry and Dior.

The mess began on 22 January 2026, when reports said the National Tax Service had hit him with an extra income tax bill of more than 20 billion won (about US$13.6 million). Authorities allege that a company set up by his mother was used to route his entertainment income through lower corporate tax rates, and the tax service reportedly treated it as a paper company with no real business. No source I read reports a criminal charge or court finding.

He apologised on Instagram on 26 January, saying he would accept the authorities’ final decision. He also said his army enlistment was not an intentional choice to avoid the controversy. In April he said he had paid all related taxes and that the responsibility lay with him, though Korean press reported the public mood stayed sour and some read the payment as image repair.

On the harm check, the coverage I read turned up nothing: no words or acts against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, and no conspiracy-theory slide. He is a mainstream idol-actor who mostly stays out of politics, so that is an absence of evidence rather than a record of advocacy. His recent big project is the Netflix superhero comedy The Wonderfools with Park Eun-bin, which is nothing worrying.

The latest twist is that part of the bill was found to be double taxation, so the amount was cut to about 13 billion won, which he paid in full. He then went to the Tax Tribunal anyway, with his agency Fantagio saying it wanted a legal ruling through the proper channels. He is due out of the army in January 2027, and a new drama is under consideration but not confirmed.

On the good side, he gave 100 million won to the Korean Red Cross for wildfire recovery in March 2025. That is the only verified charity I could source, so I won’t pad it out. Fans rate him, but there is little here of him going out on a limb for other people.
