Do we like CGP Grey?
Our score: 6 out of 10. Nothing harmful or nasty turned up, but there's little reporting on him, so we can't say much more than that.
CGP Grey is a YouTube explainer who keeps his face off camera. Early coverage describes quick cuts between still images over a voiceover, covering politics, science, geography and busted myths. Tubefilter reported in 2013 that he broke out in 2011 with a video untangling the UK, Great Britain and England, and he already had more than 733,000 subscribers.
Even his early fans were an unusual bunch. Eugene Volokh wrote in 2013 that he and his two young sons enjoyed the channel, and called the videos “educational but short, fast-paced, and funny”. That's about as wholesome as an endorsement gets, though it's a decade old now.
Now the harm check. We searched for anything he's said or done about trans and LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines or the climate, and for the company he keeps. Nothing turned up, and no slide into grievance or conspiracy theories either. That's an absence in the reporting we could read, not a stamp of approval, because outlets haven't covered him closely.
On the good-person test, no court cases, lawsuits or allegations from established outlets turned up. A dispute with a reaction channel over copyright circulates in fan videos, but only from one side. That's tabloid territory, so we're not running it as fact. The honest summary is that the record is quiet.
A small sign of character is in his own newsletter. In January 2024 he wrote that Steamboat Willie had entered the public domain, which made his old copyright video out of date. He moved that video to his bonus vault and recorded a casual rewatch of it. Correcting your own back catalogue when the facts change is a decent habit.
We found no verified charity work or standout kind acts either, so there's no extra credit to add. That keeps this at a solid but cautious yes rather than a gush. If you love his videos, nothing we could find says you shouldn't.
