Do we like Carolina Marín?
Our score: 8 out of 10. A clean record and a big, well-liked career, but not much on the record about causes beyond her sport.
Carolina Marín is the Huelva-born player who dragged European badminton into a sport Asia had owned. She won Olympic singles gold at Rio 2016, the only woman from outside Asia to do it, and became the first woman to win three world championships.
She also held the world No. 1 spot for a record 66 weeks and collected a record seven European titles. In 2024 Spain's Princess of Asturias Foundation gave her its Sports award, and the page for it calls her Spain's greatest badminton player.
The recent story is her goodbye. She announced her retirement in March 2026 in a social media video, saying her journey in professional badminton had come to an end. She also told fans she effectively retired on court in Paris in 2024 without knowing it at the time.
On the harm check, we found nothing. No remarks about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet turned up in the reporting we read, no conspiracy-theory slide, and no dodgy co-stars or projects. That is partly because she keeps her public talk to sport, so call it clean but quiet rather than a loud ally.
On the good-person test there are no court rulings or accusations against her in the established outlets we found. A few search results were about other people with the same name, and we ignored them. The record shows honours and respect from the sport, but little detail on charity, so we are not gushing.
So would we support her? Yes. She is a trailblazer who won on merit, left on her own terms and has no stain in the record we could find. The only reason it is not a 10 is that the file does not show much use of her platform for causes.
