Do we like Cameron Smith?
Our score: 6 out of 10. Nothing harmful in his own words turned up, but the evidence on his character is thin and his employer is the contested part.
Cam Smith is the Aussie who captains Ripper GC on the LIV circuit, and he's 32, by his own account. He told reporters in May he's got a while yet in the game, so retirement talk is off the table for now.
The big live issue is whether his league survives. Smith said he'd been given every assurance LIV will keep running beyond 2026 while it hunts for new funding. He also said the aim is definitely to bring the Adelaide event back in 2027.
In August he went further at a press conference before LIV New York at Trump Bedminster. He said that if LIV folded and the PGA Tour was the only option, he'd want to be there, 100 percent. He also said he wanted LIV to work, so he's not exactly jumping ship.
On the harm test, I found no campaigning, conspiracy talk or demeaning comments from him about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet in what I read. The mark against him is where he earns his living: a Saudi-funded league that critics call sportswashing, and an event at a Trump course. That's company and employer, not his words, so it earns an asterisk and not a fail.
On the good-person test, the record I could read in full is quiet. There's no court case or settled claim against him that I found, and no pattern of mistreating people. Honest answer: he's a bloke who mostly talks about golf, and there isn't much in the sources to say more.
