Do we like Bruce Willis?

Our score: 7 out of 10. A decent record on harm and on how he treats people, with one pandemic-era slip he apologised for.

Walter Bruce Willis was born in West Germany in 1955 to a German mother and an American soldier. The family settled in Carneys Point, New Jersey. He worked as a security guard at a nuclear plant and as a private investigator before studying drama and dropping out in 1977.

Moonlighting made him a TV name in the mid-80s, and Die Hard in 1988 made him John McClane for good. Then came Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element and The Sixth Sense. He retired from acting in 2022, so there is no new work to check for dodgy company, and nothing recent turned up in the news that bears on this question.

What he has actually said on politics is mixed. In a 2007 interview with Bill O'Reilly he said he had “just as many liberal ideas as I have conservative ideas.” He also said yes to small government and lower taxes. That's a bloke who won't be filed under one party, and we found no campaigning against LGBTQ+ people or other groups.

The one real stain is January 2021. Page Six reported that he was asked to leave a Los Angeles Rite Aid after refusing to wear a mask. He later called it an “error of judgment” and told people to keep masking up. An apology only counts if behaviour follows it, and nothing we found suggests a repeat or any anti-vax push.

On the good side, he donated Idaho's Soldier Mountain Ski Area to a community nonprofit in 2012. Bruckheimer said Willis put cash into the weekly crew giveaway on Armageddon and called him a “good guy.” That's one producer's recollection, but it's the sort of thing crews remember.

That's honestly a thin file on controversy: a mask slip and some old business spats we couldn't verify here. He's an easy yes for a Die Hard rewatch.
