Do we like Britney Spears?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Years of public support for LGBTQ+ fans and nothing harmful turned up, held back by a messy 2026 and a thin record on trans issues.

Britney's story is mostly one of control. In 2008 her father petitioned for a conservatorship, which was made permanent that October and ran for 13 years. The documentary Framing Britney Spears in 2021 fed the #FreeBritney movement, and she told the court she wanted her life back. A judge ended it on 12 November 2021.

The harm check comes out clean. In 2018 she was announced as the recipient of GLAAD's Vanguard Award, and she said she was proud to be an ally. In her memoir she wrote about her bond with gay friends in terms of love. We found no campaigning against LGBTQ+ people, women or migrants, and no slide into conspiracy theories.

The messy bit is this year. She was arrested in March on suspicion of drink driving in Ventura County. On 4 May her lawyer entered a guilty plea to a reduced reckless driving charge, the DUI charge was dismissed, and she got a year of summary probation. That is a real stain, but a single one rather than a pattern of mistreating people.

Then came a viral restaurant story. Jeff Sneider, a journalist, posted on X that he was dining nearby. TMZ reported unnamed patrons alleging she was screaming, barking and walking past tables holding a knife. Her rep told HELLO! she was cutting her hamburger and that nobody was put in danger. That is a disputed account with no court involvement, so treat it as tabloid territory.

On the business side, Variety reported, citing TMZ, that she sold her catalog and other rights to Primary Wave in a deal said to be worth around nine figures. Her reps declined to comment. In January she wrote that she would never perform in the US again but hoped to play the UK and Australia. We found no confirmed tour dates and no new film or music, so we can't check who she is working with.

Put together, she is on the right side of the people we care about, and her fans, especially her queer fans, have been loyal for decades. This year is a stain, not a pattern. Anyone who cheered for her after the conservatorship can keep cheering.
