Do we like Bretman Rock?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Years of visible, unapologetic queer and Filipino advocacy and no harmful words found, held back only by thin records on some issues and a few old gaffes.

Bretman came to Hawaii from the Philippines as a kid and grew up in a crowded, low-income household. He has joked he knew he wasn't the only kid who moved to America and lived with 30 cousins in one house. That scrappy start is the core of his whole brand.

He went viral as a teen beauty guru on Vine and YouTube, with a cheeky contour tutorial among his first hits, and he stood out as one of the first guys in a very female-dominated space. TIME named him one of its most influential teens at 19, and MTV gave him a reality series set in Hawaii. Makeup lines with Morphe, Colourpop and Wet n Wild followed.

In 2021 he became the first openly gay man on the cover of Playboy, posing in a bunny outfit. He said it was a huge deal for the LGBT community and for brown people, and that he hoped it would give queer kids the representation he never saw on TV growing up.

On the harm check, nothing turned up: no attacks on any group, no conspiracy rabbit holes and no questionable collaborators in what we read. He talks about gender expression plainly, saying we should all be allowed to wear whatever we want. To be straight with you, coverage of him on trans issues specifically is thin, so that's a gap, not a gold star.

The mistakes are small and old. A video of him dancing to the Philippine national anthem resurfaced in late 2019 and copped heavy criticism back home, and he apologised and said he'd take full responsibility. The latest stoush is a January 2026 podcast tale of a cold Coachella encounter with Vanessa Hudgens, who had not responded in that report. It's pure celebrity pettiness, told from his side only.

So the verdict: he passes both tests comfortably, a funny, generous-seeming queer immigrant who made it without sanding himself down. The ceiling on the score is just a short record on some issues and a past gaffe or two. Easy yes.
