Do we like Brendan Murphy?
Our score: 6 out of 10. Nothing harmful found and a bit of fan-friendly fight in him, but too little confirmed to score him higher.
Brendan Murphy fronts Counterparts, the Canadian hardcore band out of Hamilton, Ontario. He is not to be confused with Australia's former chief medical officer of the same name, a mix-up that has caught out more than one person in Australian news.
The latest story is the Broken Avenue stoush. Skiddle reported in January 2026 that Counterparts called out the act, which had built up a big Spotify audience, over music and artwork that fans said echoed Counterparts and other metalcore bands. The suspicion is that it is AI-generated, and that is a suspicion, not something we could confirm.
On how he treats people, nothing negative surfaced either. Search coverage also mentions a past public dispute with a promoter over pay on an Australian tour, which we could not read in full, so we have left the details out. Standing up for your band's pay in public is a fair thing to do, but we can't judge it without the full reporting.
The good stuff is also thin in our record. We found no confirmed charity work or honours, and we couldn't open the interviews to pull quotes. Fans clearly rate the band, which has a 2026 touring cycle on its Heaven Let Them Die EP, but that is about music, not character.
